Can Canvas Tell?

Can Canvas tell if you screenshot?

No — and it's not even close. A screenshot happens at the operating- system level, somewhere your browser can't reach. Here's why that puts it completely outside Canvas's view.

NoThe short answer

Can Canvas tell if you screenshot?

No. A screenshot is an operating-system action your browser never sees, so standard Canvas can't detect it — or stop it. Only a locked-down proctoring browser like Respondus LockDown Browser can attempt to block screenshots.

Why a screenshot is invisible to Canvas

When you press the screenshot keys, your operating system captures the screen — the browser isn't involved and gets no notification. Since Canvas only runs inside the browser tab, it has no event to see and no way to know a capture happened. The same is true of screen recorders and phone photos: all of it lives outside the page.

The only thing that can try to stop it

A standard quiz can neither detect nor prevent screenshots. The one tool that tries is a locked-down proctoring browser like Respondus LockDown Browser, which takes over your machine during the exam to disable captures. If your quiz isn't forcing that, your screenshots are your own — just remember that leaving the quiz tab is still logged.

Frequently asked questions

Can Canvas tell if you screenshot?
No. A screenshot is handled by your operating system, not the web page, so the browser never reports it and Canvas can't detect it. It also can't prevent you from taking one.
Can Canvas tell if I screenshot a quiz on my phone?
No. A phone is a separate device entirely outside Canvas's view. There's no way for a quiz running on your laptop to know you photographed or screenshotted it elsewhere.
Does any tool block screenshots?
A locked-down proctoring browser like Respondus LockDown Browser can attempt to disable screenshots and screen recording during an exam. Standard Canvas in a normal browser can't.
Is screenshotting a quiz risk-free then?
The screenshot itself is invisible to Canvas. The usual caveat applies: if grabbing or using it makes you leave the quiz tab, that focus loss is logged.
