Does Canvas Track?

Does Canvas track keystrokes?

A common worry, and a misplaced one. Standard Canvas isn't a keylogger — it stores your answers and their timing, not the keys you press to get there. Here's what it really records.

NoThe short answer

Does Canvas track keystrokes?

No. Standard Canvas does not log your keystrokes. It records your answers and the timing around them — not what you type, delete, or retype along the way. Keystroke tracking would require a separate proctoring tool an instructor turns on.

What Canvas records while you type

When you answer a question, Canvas saves the result — the option you chose or the text you submitted — and timestamps it. It does not keep a key-by-key recording of how you got there. Backspacing, rewording, and pasting all collapse into the single answer that's stored.

Why the keylogger fear is misplaced

A web page can technically listen for keypresses inside its own fields, but standard Canvas doesn't retain that as part of the quiz record, and it certainly can't see typing outside the quiz. What it actually leans on is far simpler: whether you left the page and how your timing looks.

The exception: proctoring tools

If your instructor enables a proctoring add-on, the picture can change — some tools analyze typing patterns or record your screen. Those are separate, visible products, not standard Canvas. CheatGPT is built for ordinary browser-based quizzes, where what you type is your business.

Frequently asked questions

Does Canvas track keystrokes?
No. Standard Canvas doesn't log keystrokes. It stores your answers and timestamps the timing around them, but it isn't recording each key you press.
Can Canvas see what I type and delete?
No. Drafting, deleting, and retyping in an answer field isn't captured keystroke-by-keystroke. Canvas saves the answer you submit, not the path you took to it.
Does Canvas use keystroke biometrics?
Not on its own. Keystroke-dynamics or typing-pattern analysis would require a separate proctoring or biometric tool that an instructor explicitly enables — it's not part of standard quizzes.
What does Canvas actually record while I type?
Your saved answers and the timestamps of when you answered or changed them — plus whether you left the quiz page. The content of your keystrokes isn't part of that.
